Championship Weekend

Two weekends ago, my 2012 Flag team played in and won the RCRC 7-8 year old championship tournament. It was a very full but fun filled day. We had to win 2 games in a winner take all single elimination format and my team was so up to it. All week long we worked them out to fine tune some minor issues I noticed and put in a couple extra trick plays just in case. There were only 4 teams in our division and we played numerous times over the season so in the end we faced two very tough teams that were well prepared for my aerial attack. My team seemed ready for the task and I could see that they understood what we were trying to accomplish. After round one we ended up facing the only team that had beat us this year and I was afraid that they would not be mentally up for it. They proved me wrong and hung tough the whole time. In the end we won the championship and lived up to all the goals that we set for the year EXCEPT for that elusive “undefeated” season that I want so bad. But oh well, I’ll take the championship. Below are some photos of the team and my son holding his 5th championship trophy. I’m very proud of this team and their dedication to each other and our team concept, “One Team, One Goal”.

Good job 2012 Missouri Tigers. You are the Richland County Recreation Commission 7-8 year old Division Champions!!

#Team200

Hi Family,

I am on a fitness quest to start a movement amongst my friends and family to be more healthy. I know we all cheat and don't always do what's right in regards to nutrition but we all have to start somewhere. I am currently doing a very simple workout that can be done at work. It's helps me a lot just to stay motivated. I have some coworkers doing it with me so it makes it more fun.

The program is pretty easy to do. I call it Team 200 because the object is to do 200 of whatever it is we are doing that day. I broke my day down into hourly segments and I do 25 push up or sit ups every hour totaling 200 per day. If I don't make it at work because of actually WORKING...LOL, then I finish at home before I got to bed.

I found a pretty neat site that helps you to build up to the 200 if your fitness level won't allow it yet. Trust me, it took me a while too.

Check it out and let me know if t was helpful. I need your input to make this more meaningful and useful for everyone.

Have fun and click here to check out hundredpushups.com.

Laugh For The Day

I work in an environment where we work hard but we also play hard. We had a little fun at the expense of one of my coworkers (if you knew her it would be sooo much funnier). I hope you enjoy it as much as we did.

Work Hard, Play Hard!

The Hidden Link Between Youth Sports and Obesity - Your Thoughts?

I was perusing the internet and ran across this video clip. This is an issue that I am very passionate about and needs to be addressed. I have been fortunate to have had some truly awesome parents over my years as a coach but others are not so lucky. Parents that try to live vicariously through their kids are running the experience for everyone including YOUR kids. I am a coach mainly because I love sports and mentoring youths but mainly because I want my kids (yours and mine) to have a great experience playing the sport they love. There is a link between childhood obesity and sports for certain but one of the missing links that is often not explored is the parents. Often times I am not a spectator but I do see parents that are pushing their kids a little too hard. I have seen some parents that think their child is going to the league this year at 5 years old and are constantly yelling at them when they make mistakes. That is undue pressure for a child that is to them, “just playing a game”. Sports are meant for fun and exercise so these kids can get out from in front of the PS3 or Xbox and have fun socializing in the outdoors. If you have a child that plays sports, I encourage you to keep it light and let them have fun.
What are your thoughts on this?

Question: Are coaches kids pre-disposed to be better than those of non coaches?

Ok, I have question for yall. Do you all think that coaches kids are pre-destined to be better than those of a non coach. This all started from a conversation my friend and I were having. We were watching one of the spring flag football games and just observing the players. There were some that were average, below average, and one or two superstars. The one or two superstars were the kids of the coaches and it was clear that they were on a different level than the other kids. I yelled, "I knew it!", and we laughed. My buddy thinks that coaches' kids get preferential treatment and I sort of agree but only to a point. I was telling him that coaches' kids have more of an advantage simply because they live with the coach and are always immersed in sports at home. It's in our blood and it bleeds over. Our lives are just one really long practice...LOL.

Example: My son (age 8) is the QB of my team and has a very high football IQ. He knows the entire playbook and can execute it flawlessly. In fact he helped make some of it up. I was initially worried about the other parents claiming he was getting preferential treatment but all that ended once they saw him play.

So I wanted to throw it out there to yall. Do you think that coaches kids are that much better or do they get preferential treatment? Would love to hear you comments on this one.
